Intercultural learning within the Communion of Churches in three Continents

The »Ecumenical Workshops« in Wuppertal and Bethel

Since 1971 the United Evangelical Mission (UEM) has had two conference centres in Wuppertal and in Bielefeld-Bethel: the “Ecumenical Workshop Wuppertal” and the “Ecumenical Workshop Bethel”, which are also educational institutions of the UEM.

Both houses are places of fellowship and intercultural learning in theory and practice.

Workshop means: getting to know people from various cultures and different churches; learning to work in many different ways; trying out new steps and developing new ideas how what has been learnt can be put into practice in one’s own life, in school, congregation and society.

Justice in the One World, ecumenism, intercultural encounter, further training for those involved in church work

The ecumenical workshops offer seminars on subjects related to the One World, ecumenism and intercultural encounters. Partnership work — meeting with Christians from other churches and other countries – is a basic characteristic of the UEM and the dialogue with other religions is also very important.

The ecumenical workshops offer further training courses for full-time staff employed in the church and also for voluntary workers. Many of the courses are recognised as further training courses by the congregations and church districts and are supported and sponsored by them.

The ecumenical workshops cooperate with other church institutions and educational establishments, such as the Wuppertal Church University, the Protestant Lay Training Centre in Westphalia and Lippe, the Protestant Youth Training Centre Hackhauser Hof and also with institutions for Christian-Muslim dialogue.
