Job vacancies within the UEM

In Wuppertal and Bielefeld, Dar es Salaam and Medan, and many other places in the world, our staff is hard at work. And the tasks to be done are as diverse as the worksites. At our head office in Wuppertal administrators, theologians, and other expert staff work together hand in hand – and the same is true for our regional offices in Africa and Asia. We also send pastors, administrative experts, peacekeeping experts, and other staff to our member churches in the Southern Hemisphere – and staff from the South also visit our German member churches.

  • Executive Secretary, Asia Department (m/f)

    Executive Secretary, Asia Department (m/f)

     

    The Executive Secretary Asia is responsible for leading the Asia Department. He/she is a member of the UEM Management Team and reports to the General Secretary. The regional department Asia (geographical area of responsibility) contributes to the fulfilment of the aims of the UEM, by actively structuring the cooperation with the UEM members including the provision of requested services. The regional department ensures the development of respective regional programmes and concepts of the UEM. The Executive Secretary ensures the implementation of the aims of the UEM through operational management.

    Tasks:

    • Promote the UEM work and the cooperation and exchange between member churches in the regions Asia, Germany and Africa. 
    • Keep regular contact with the member churches in the region by visits, correspondence, preaching and lecturing in order to strengthen the relationship among UEM member churches in all regions regard to theological, personnel, financial and other cooperation.
    • Observe, reflect on and interpret the situation of the member churches and of the region with regard to theological, political, social and other developments.
    • Through and in cooperation with the Deputy Executive Secretary: Partnership and Projects to accompany, support, advise and foster South- South and North-South partnership relations according to the UEM guidelines for partnership.
    • In cooperation with the staff in the department: To develop the programs of the Asia Region and to prepare the list of needs of the region in the budget process.
    • Give advice, to support and monitor the planning, implementation and evaluation of programs and projects of the member churches in the region.
    • Participate in the publication of regional UEM news and articles both inside and outside UEM.
    • Fundraising / contributing ideas and encouraging the churches in supporting UEM mission financially (UNITED ACTION).

    What we expect:

    • Ordination (e.g. as pastor, evangelist) and/or theological qualification with university degree
    • Understanding of missiological and ecumenical issues
    • Knowledge of the churches’ mission and development service in the form of exchange of personnel and support of projects
    • At least two years of experience in leadership and management, organizational and fundraising skills
    • Willingness to travel frequently (nationally and internationally)
    • Excellent command of the English language and, if possible, in Indonesian language, capacity to learn German

    The term of service is for four years (if necessary, a period of learning the German language will be provided under conditions of the UEM scholarship programme) from June 1st, 2017, with the possibility of extension. The office is located in Wuppertal, Germany.

  • Pastor (m/f) as tutor for our Training Centre Wuppertal (Germany)

    The United Evangelical Mission (UEM) is an international communion of 35 churches in Africa, Asia and Germany, and Bethel. The UEM members support each other in facing present day missionary challenges, among others through the exchange of personnel and sharing of resources.

    For our internationally / interculturally composed team we are looking for a

    Pastor (m/f)

    as tutor for our Training Centre Wuppertal – Global Learning in Ecumenical Perspective (Germany). The Training Center focusses especially on capacity building in the area of intercultural / transcultural learning, interreligious dialogue and development and mission.

    Tasks

    • You work as tutor in seminars and conferences on topics dealing with e.g. mission, ecumenical relations and issues of justice, peace and the integrity of creation
    • You will be responsible for the development, planning and implementation of the educational programmes, also in cooperation with universities
    • Regarding international seminars: You coordinate the cooperation with mainly church-based partners and UEM departments
    • You share the African/Asian perspective
    • You participate in committees.

    We expect from you

    • Qualification as pastor with university degree and ordination
    • Experience in educational work with adults
    • Excellent command of English, basic German language skills (at least ability to learn the German language well and quickly)
    • Good communication skills and experience with intercultural communication as well as ability to work in a team
    • Desire to help German churches face their missionary challenges
    • Driving skills and an international driving license

  • Medical Doctor / Health worker on Mentawai island, Indonesia

    The United Evangelical Mission (UEM) is an international communion of 35 churches in Africa, Asia and Germany, and Bethel. The UEM members support each other in facing present day missionary challenges, among others through the exchange of personnel and sharing of resources.

    On behalf of our member church, the Protestant Christian Church in Mentawai (GKPM) in Indonesia we are looking for a

     Medical Doctor / Health worker

    Mission work on Mentawai islands (West Sumatra) was started in 1901 by the Rhenisch Mission. The GKPM was founded 1978. Today the church has 26.500 members and employs 23 pastors and ten assistant pastors/evangelists. On Mentawai islands 80% of the population is Christian (mainly protestant).

    The islands of Mentawai are very isolated from the rest of Sumatra and medical services are underdeveloped. Many people are suffering from malnutrition and other sickness caused by poor basic health care. However there are signs of hope: Buildings are currently under construction, presently a doctor from the U.S. helps in the GKPM clinic in Nemnemleleu.

    In order to face these challenges the UEM, on behalf of the GKPM, searches a qualified, experienced and committed medical doctor or heath worker for GKPM´s polyclinic in Nemmemleleu. GKPM expects the UEM co-worker to contribute to the restructuring of the health care system and in the revitalization of the medical services as well as to develop and implement a structure for a community based health care in the congregations.

    The following qualifications are needed:

    • Degree in medicine and permit to practise in Indonesia
    • Readiness to serve in the societies in the field of health care
    • Counselling skills
    • Professional experience of some years
    • Ecumenical and international experience
    • Mother tongue: Bahasa Indonesia, good English language skills
    • Member of a Christian church

    The appointment will be for a period of three years with the possibility of extension.

  • Theological Lecturer (PhD) Nias, Indonesia

    The United Evangelical Mission (UEM) is an international communion of 35 churches in Africa, Asia and Germany, and Bethel. The UEM members support each other in facing present day missionary challenges, among others through the exchange of personnel and sharing of resources.

    For serving the STT Sundermann of our member church, the Christian Protestant Church on Nias Island (BNKP) we are looking for a

    Theological Lecturer (PhD)

    The BNKP in 1865 arose from the work of the Rhenish Mission and got independent in 1936. BNKP consists of 35.000 members, employs 120 pastors, 16 assistant pastors, 8 evangelists and 784 heads of congregation.

    The STT BNKP Sundermann is a centre of theological education run by the BNKP. Here the future pastors of the churches on Nias, on Mentawai and in Angkola  are trained.  STT Sundermann also trains people to become teachers of religious education in junior and senior high schools on Nias and on other islands in Indonesia. Presently there are more than 250 students study in STT Sundermann. 70 % of them are women. STT BNKP Sundermann has 14 lecturers. Among them 6 lecturers have Master degree and one has a Ph. D. degree. The rest has Bachelor degree in Theology. The lecturers of STT are asked to regularly offer trainings in the congregations and be involved in the trainings of vicars.

    Based on the request of the BNKP, UEM is looking for an additional lecturer with the following qualification:

    Qualification:

    • PhD in Theology (Systematics, Biblical Theology)
    • Experience of some years to work as a pastor in the congregation
    • Ecumenical and international experience

  • Theological Lecturer for GKI-TP

    Theological Lecturer (PhD), West Papua/IndonesienOn behalf of our member church, the Evangelical Christian Church in Tanah Papua (GKI-TP) in Indonesia we are looking for a

    Theological Lecturer (PhD)

    The GKI-TP is the fruit of the work of the Gossner Mission (Germany) which started in 1855, and of the Dutch Reformed Mission. In 1960, the Rhenish Missionary Society (now UEM) started missionary work in Dutch New Guinea (now part of Indonesia). The GKI-TP became autonomous in 1956.

    The four main programmes of the GKI-TP are

    • Theology, evangelism and mission;
    • Education, from elementary to tertiary levels;
    • Public services in the area of human rights, legal support, politics and human security;
    • Awareness building for financial self-reliance.

    The church runs its own theological seminary for the training of pastors, the Isaac Samuel Kijne Theological College (STT Kijne) in Abepura / Jayapura.

    The pastoral work of GKI-TP is being done by about 950 pastors, 280 lay preachers and 170 evangelists. Furthermore, the church employs an administrative staff of 240 people.

    The person sought will lecture at the STT Kijne and help developing GKI-TP’s congregational development programs.

    The following qualifications are needed:

    • Doctorate in Theology
    • Experience of some years in ministry and teaching
    • Ecumenical and international experience
    • Excellent English language skills
    • For non-Indonesians, excellence in / readiness for learning the Bahasa Indonesia up to an academic level is a prerequisite.  

    The appointment will be for a period of three years with the possibility of extension.
