(20/07/07) Alex Gehaz Malasusa, Bishop of the Eastern and Coastal Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELCT-ECD) has been elected Presiding Bishop of the ELCT for the nex four years, the ELCT head office announced in a press release on Thursday.
Malasusa received 132 of the 184 votes of the Assembly of the ELCT. Three candidates had been presented to the highest decision making body of the Church by the Executive Council.
Malasusa succeeds Dr Samson Mushemba whose term as Presiding
Bishop expires this month.
Malasusa, aged 47, is the youngest Presiding Bishop in the history of the ELCT. He studied theology at the Makumira University College. He became pastor in 1994. In April 2004, Malasusa, who was youth officer of the African region of the UEM at the time, was consecrated Bishop of the Eastern and Coastal Diocese. He is married with three children.
The ELCT has 3.5 million members. Four of the 20 dioceses are members of the UEM community: the Eastern and Coastal Diocese (ECD), the North-Eastern Diocese (NED), the North-Western Diocese (NWD), and the Karagwe Diocese (KAD).
