The United Evangelical Mission is a communion of 34 churches in three continents, with fifiteen member churches in Asia, thirteen in Africa, and five churches in Germany plus the von Bodelschwingh Institutions Bethel.
The relations of the German region to the churches in Africa and Asia go back to the activites of the Rhenish Mission Society, the Bethel Mission and the Zaire Mission, who sent missionaries from the 19th century on to other continents to bring the Good News to the people in what is now Nambia, China, Indonesia or Tanzania.
The German missionaries founded mission stations which in time became independent churches and which are now equal members of the international community.
Exchange of personnel and expertise
Today, men and women from African and Asian churches come to Germany to leave their own footprints in the ecumenical world and to help their German partners find new ways to deal with the challenges of today, such as the decline in memberships and decreasing funds.
Moreover, the relations between African and Asian UEM member churches have intensified over the past few years. Some of the challenges the churches are facing today are common to all three regions.
For example, the Asian members may learn from the experience of African UEM co-members in their approach to face HIV and Aids. The anti-Aids programmes of the churches in Namibia, Botswana and Tanzania have long grown up. Some of them have become role models in their own countries.
Therefore, the UEM is not only a community of believers, but also a network in capacity building, which reaches beyond the borders of individual churches.
After the tsunami in 2004, the churches in Asia and particularly the regional office in Medan were elementary in providing emergency aid to the people in the affected areas.
- Football fans in Wuppertal raise funds to help those affected by the tsunami. The football players themselves contribute to the work of the UEM.
