Since the middle of the 1950s over 400 women and men have studied or trained with support from the United Evangelical Mission in order to work as qualified staff in their churches.
Women are being sponsored increasingly. For around 5 years now there have been as many women as men in the programme. At present 30 women and 23 men have a scholarship from the UEM.
The scholarship programme of the UEM is principally open for all forms of training and degree programmes.
The main focus is on international post-graduate studies. The member churches – and only they, not individuals – can put in applications for financing studies. They do this particularly, as was always the case, for theologians. Churches and church universities require well trained theologians to carry out their task. Almost half the scholarships go to theologians: at present 24 of the 51 scholarship students are studying theology.
The largest group of scholarship students that are not theologians are studying administration and management. Other students are studying medicine, education and development science or also human rights and hotel management. This reflects the needs of the member churches.
