School means so much more than reading, writing, and arithmetic. It is a place where children discover their talents, experience community, and gain self-confidence. Yet many children around the world grow up without safe access to education – in poverty, in crisis regions, or in families who cannot afford school fees. This is exactly where our member churches step in: in their schools they create spaces where children and young people can learn and develop in a protected environment. Schools provide stability, structure – and often the only warm meal of the day.
Kazi Ilunga (12) * lives with his family in the rainforest of western Congo. His parents are small-scale farmers and wish for their children to receive a good education.
Kazi and his siblings attend the school of the Church of the Disciples of Christ in Congo, a UEM member church. Kazi loves mathematics and dreams of becoming an engineer so he can build schools and hospitals in the future. The school gives him the opportunity to make his dream come true and to shape his own future.
For Ayu Simanjuntak * (10) , her school is a place full of life. Every day she learns, plays, and laughs with her friends. At the primary school of the Christian Protestant PakPak Dairi Church, Ayu discovered her talent for writing stories. Her teacher encourages her to keep going. Within this community she feels safe, even in difficult times. After the floods, her parents’ house was severely damaged, but her school remained untouched. For Ayu and many other children, their school is a second home – a place that provides safety and comfort.
The partnership between Karambi Secondary School in Tanzania and the comprehensive school in Salzkotten connects young people across continents. Through exchange, they discover new perspectives and learn from one another. This fosters understanding, respect, and friendship – valuable foundations for life in a globalized world. From these encounters grow understanding and shared responsibility for a more just world, supported by the fellowship of the churches.
