A patient is examined at the Marsudi Waluyo Hospital of the Christian Church in East Java, Indonesia. This is routine and everyday life in many hospitals of the UEM member churches in Africa, Asia and Germany. Health is a concern that affects us all, no matter where we live in the world. However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 3.6 million people - almost half of the world's population - have no access to medical care. Many people cannot afford the costs of medical treatment, medication and insurance. In some rural areas, there is a lack of hospitals, medical staff and necessary care facilities.
Awareness campaigns in schools and communities on topics such as healthy eating and hygiene have helped to reduce preventable diseases in recent years. Large cities already have well-equipped laboratories, but there is often a lack of well-trained medical staff in rural regions.
Staff from the UEM's "International Diaconia" department organize conferences on the topic of health. Representatives of UEM member churches from Africa, Asia and Germany discuss themes such as trauma treatment, the ethical recruitment of medical staff at international level and HIV/AIDS. In this way, networks develop in which experiences are shared and mutual support and advice is provided.
