The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Silliman University, Dumaguete, the Philippine and Tumaini Makumira, Tanzania was conducted on September 16, 2015 at Tumaini Makumira, Arusha, Tanzania. Cooperation between the two universities in Asia and Africa is the first experience for both universities. In 2014 two delegations from Tumaini University represented by Prof. Dr. Joseph Parsalaw and Dr. Faustin Mahali Silliman campus visited the Silliman campus in the Philippines. The reciprocate visit is organized in 2015, in which two delegations of the Silliman University visited the campus of Tumaini and all agrees to sign the MoU as a new step of the cooperation.
Both universities are able to find similarities in many aspects, whom they would like to collaborate together, such as: Student and Visiting Lecture Exchanges, where board and lodging will be provided together; Visiting Teacher for short semester; Research collaboration in relevant topics such as Response of Tribes and Indigenous for Globalization.
The Vice Chancellor Prof Joseph Parsalaw emphasizes that the Christians in Tanzania have been so blessed with the missionary works through education. He states: “Now our Mission is advanced through partnership and cooperation.” In connection to it, Grace Sumalpong, member of Board of Trustees of the Silliman University expects, that the South-South Cooperation supposed to be developed in the future, as both continents have much similarities to be explored. Both universities thanked the UEM for this initiative, that the idea of Mission through education and partnership is visible nowadays for both universities.
