The Indonesian island of Nias received unusually heavy rainfall in the night of 14 to 15 August 2021. Thousands of people were surprised by the huge masses of water at night while they were sleeping. Hundreds of houses were flooded. Livestock, household goods and vehicles were washed away. The flood hits one of the poorest areas in Indonesia. Helplessly, people are waiting in temporary shelters for the rain to stop. But the situation remains dramatic. The rainy season in this region of Asia has just begun.
