More than two billion people worldwide have no access to clean drinking water.
In rural regions of Africa and Asia in particular, contaminated springs, a lack of wells and inadequate sanitary facilities jeopardise health - especially that of children. In Germany, clean water still flows freely from the tap. But here, too, people are increasingly experiencing periods of drought and flash floods.
This is why our UEM member churches are involved in local projects and programmes to provide clean drinking water.
There is no public water supply in the village of Lak Lak on the island of Sumatra. Families are dependent on contaminated water from a single water point. Children in particular suffer from diarrhoea, infections and malnutrition. To improve the situation, the Pakpak Dairi Church is building a well and installing washbasins and toilets at the kindergarten. Hygiene training sessions are organised for the children and their families with illustrative posters.
In the refugee camps in eastern Congo, the Baptist Church in Central Africa provides thousands with clean drinking water every day. The church provides refugees with water canisters and buckets, which families use to wait at temporary standpipes. The difficult logistics and limited availability of drinking water lead to long waiting times and constant insecurity. In order to improve the situation in the long term, the church is planning to build new wells and water pipes.
