"Freedom, Unity, Hope - Germany sings and sounds," according to the motto of October 3, the Day of German Unity, people all over Germany were invited to sing simultaneously in 300 cities.
In Wuppertal, the United Evangelical Mission together with the Protestant Singers' Association, the Evangelical Alliance and the Working Group of Christian Churches invited people to sing along on Laurentiusplatz in the heart of the city. More than 100 enthusiastic visitors took advantage of the special atmosphere of the evening and sang together songs such as the Ode to Joy, the anthem of the European Union, but also "By loving forces silently surrounded" in reference to the poem of the Protestant theologian and resistance fighter during the Nazi era, Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
In their speeches, Wuppertal's mayor Uwe Schneidewind and Helge Lindh, member of Parliament and patron of the evening, recalled the peaceful German reunification and called on the visitors to stand up for peace in the world and the protection of human rights.
