Cape Town with the famous Table Mountain is considered an attractive destination for more than 8 million South African tourists per year. They visit the beautiful beaches and the neighborhoods inhabited by rich whites. But the city also has another face that remains hidden from tourists.
The evangelical congregation Elsies's River is located in a working-class neighborhood characterized by poverty and unemployment. Every second young person has no job. Almost half of the residents are over sixty and live on a small pension, rarely more than 100 euros. Many still support their unemployed children and grandchildren from this pension. Often the money is barely enough to live on, and leisure activities are out of the question.
The Rhenish Church of South Africa (RCSA) brings variety into the dreary everyday life with its offers for senior citizens. These include gymnastics and music afternoons as well as information events on health and nutrition. At every meeting there is also a joint lunch, which everyone always looks forward to. Many live alone and have little opportunity for entertainment. The church's offerings are therefore popular. The most important thing for the elderly is the fellowship, getting out, sharing ideas, laughing together.
