"Climate change violates human rights"

"Climate change violates human rights", Dr Jochen Motte, UEM Executive Secretary for Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation, said today at a panel discussion of "act alliance" in the framework of the WCC General Assembly in Busan, South Korea. The UEM has published a study about "Climate, Human Rights and the role of the churches" last year, together with the WCC. UEM and WCC want to show how climate change affects people and appeal to the governments to act before it is too late. "It is a scandal that there is no international binding treaty to reduce CO2 emissions", Jochen Motte said. Many delegates of the WCC General assembly want climate justice to be a central point of the pilgrim's way to justice and peace. UEM cooperates closely with the WCC in terms of fighting for climate justice, and is a member of the respective WCC working group which will meet at UEM's headquarter in Wuppertal/Germany next year. UEM also is a member of "act alliance", a network of churches and connected organisations campaigning for joint goals in the area of development and advocacy work worldwide.
