Conference on World Mission and Evangelism in Arusha, Tanzania

UEM presented the online publication „Mission still possible? Global Perspectives on Mission and Mission Theology“ dealing with the challenges of doing mission today.More than 900 delegates, observers and guests from all over the world met on the Conference on World Mission and Evangelism to which the World Council of Churches (WCC) had invited from March 8 to 13 in Arusha (Tanzania). The discussions reflected on issues of missionary practice and sought new ways of being faithful to God’s mission with the leading of the Spirit. The participants sought to celebrate the unity of the church and of all peoples.The conference dealt with the joyful witness to Jesus Christ and his gospel. It was an ecumenical conference with an active representation of mainline Protestant, Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Evangelical, Pentecostal, and African Instituted churches. According to the opinion of many speakers today’s commitment to working for justice and reconciliation among all peoples is jeopardized by an environment, which excludes many people in the world. Wars, poverty, discrimination, and unequal distribution of wealth destroy relationships and communities. In many discussions, workshops, music events and worships the participants started to walk the pilgrimage for justice and peace. The World Council of Churches (WCC), founded exactly 70 years ago, invited all members to join the pilgrimage. As a member of WCC UEM was represented in Arusha with two delegates and two observers.During the conference in Arusha UEM invited approximately 50 delegates from UEM member churches as well as from church institutions, which are close cooperating partners of UEM, for an exchange of thoughts on March 10. Volker Martin Dally, General Secretary of UEM, welcomed the guests and emphasized the high correspondence of UEM’s holistic missionary conception with the WCC’s o goals. Daphne Guriras, member of the UEM Council as well as Jochen Motte and Andar Parlindungan, members of the UEM Management Team, informed on the missionary work of UEM. During the reception the online publication „Mission still possible? Global Perspectives on Mission and Mission Theology“ was also presented. The book contains texts dealing with the challenges of doing mission today, written by authors coming from UEM members in Africa, Asia and Germany. The authors had met at a missionary conference in the Philippines in 2016, which was held on the occasion of the 20th jubilee of the internationalization of UEM.Despite different approaches of doing mission due to different cultural and social contexts a statement on the joint goal of mission was formulated referring to John 10:10: “..that all may have life in abundance”. This understanding of a holistic mission approach from the UEM communion should be a contribution among all the other voices presented to the discussion at the Conference on World Mission and Evangelism in Arusha.The online publication can be downloaded here UEM online editorial staff
