The charity run "Run solo into the summer", launched by the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland in May this year, raised 4,100 Euros for UEM's Corona Aid in Namibia. 137 runners followed the call and ran for the donations.

All runners completed their individual route alone

Because it was not possible to organise a joint running event due to the corona protection measures, recreational athletes were able to register individually with the Rhenish church from May onwards and then run a self-chosen run or route on their own until the end of July. Those who wanted to could look for sponsors among their family, friends and acquaintances for the kilometres covered. These collected donations as well as the entry fee of five euros were then collected for the aid initiative.

Namibian member church supplies poor families with food

The money raised goes to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia (ELCRN), a member church of UEM, which is taking extensive measures to combat the spread of the corona virus and is trying to mitigate the existence-threatening consequences of the crisis for the poorest. In Namibia it is mainly the poor population that suffers from the effects of the corona curfew. Many have lost their jobs. Families who were already living at the subsistence level before the Corona crisis are now threatened by hunger. Volunteers and church employees regularly pack and distribute basic foodstuffs for 350 households. They receive financial support from the UEM Corona relief fund. "We would like to thank all the sportsmen and women who have laced up their running shoes for the people in Namibia threatened by Covid-19. With this great action, the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland has shown its solidarity with the brothers and sisters in Namibia in a very practical way," said Volker Martin Dally, General Secretary of UEM.

Support of the Corona relief initiative by KD-Bank

The initiative "Run solo into the summer" was also supported by the Bank für Kirche und Diakonie (KD-Bank). It donated the entry fee for 100 participants. Five jerseys were raffled among the runners.
