Ecumenical Network on Central Africa appeals for changes in Eastern Congo

In a joint letter the Ecumenical network on Central Africa and amnesty international ask German foreign minister Guido Westerwelle to table the topic of ongoing violence in Eastern Congo in the UN Security Council. Wielding influence on DR Congo and Rwanda is necessary to bring more peace to the region, the letter says. Almost half a million people are reported to be displaced by recent attacks of rebels and militia and seeking refuge, e.g. in church compounds. More pressure has to be put on the governments of DR Congo and Rwanda, the organisations urge. According to the letter the DR Congo has to improve its administrative and justice system as well as the security situation in Eastern Congo. Rwanda is called upon to stop its support of rebel activities in Congo. The UEM member churches in Eastern Congo and Rwanda are currently giving humanitarian aid to thousands of displaced people.
