Together the Evangelical Church in Rhineland (EKiR), Evangelical Church of Westphalia (EKvW), Evangelical Church of Hesse-Waldeck (EKKW) and UEM collected 40.000 Euro and made it available to Evangelical Lutheran Church in the Republic of Namibia (ELCRN), to provide emergency help. In Namibia many people are in imminent danger of starvation due to the catastrophic drought.
"It is the worst drought in Namibia in 30 years", says pastor Wilfred Diergaardt, general secretary of ELCRN, "330 000 people or 14 percent of the namibian population, are directly affected by this desaster."
The ground is completely dried out. Water has become a rare commodity, many animals are dying. What makes this worse is the fact, that most of the namibian inhabitants are dependent on agriculture and livestock. Moreover many cases of famine and malnutrition have been registered lately. Accordings to Namibias minister for health and social affairs more than 53 children have been subject to medical treatment in hospitals.
