The Ntshegetsang Skills Development Day Care Centre is a community-based initiative dedicated to supporting orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) through education, care, and life skills development. By providing a safe and nurturing environment, the centre enables children from disadvantaged backgrounds to learn, grow, and develop essential skills for their future.
After several years of closure, the centre resumed its operations in 2022. It currently supports 30 children between the ages of six and ten. Many of these children come from economically and socially vulnerable households, making the centre an important place of safety, learning, and hope. In addition to early childhood education, the children receive encouragement and support that help them build confidence and prepare for a better future.
A Safe Place for Learning and Growth
At the heart of the centre’s work is early childhood education, which helps children develop the foundational skills they need for a successful transition into formal schooling. The programme is implemented by a committed team consisting of two teachers, a coordinator, and support staff. Their work is guided by a six-member management board that oversees the centre’s activities and development.
Beyond classroom learning, the centre places strong emphasis on life skills development. Children are given opportunities to gain basic computer knowledge and learn practical everyday skills. These activities play an important role in fostering confidence, creativity, and independence, helping the children to develop personally and to expand their future opportunities.
The government also provides valuable support through social welfare programmes, including assistance with school uniforms and training opportunities. This support helps ensure that the children can continue their education and remain integrated within the formal education system.
Positive Impact on the Community
The centre has already made a meaningful impact on the community. A total of 62 children have successfully transitioned into primary school. This achievement highlights how early educational support and care can contribute significantly to creating brighter futures for vulnerable children.
In addition, the centre continues to receive encouragement and pastoral support from the church and the surrounding community. This collective commitment strengthens an environment of care, compassion, and solidarity, ensuring that the children grow up feeling supported, valued, and hopeful about their future.
A Sign of Living Solidarity in the UEM Communion of Churches
The project is also an example of how the international communion of the United Evangelical Mission (VEM) supports children in vulnerable situations through shared commitment and partnership. Through cooperation between member churches, partner organisations, and local communities, sustainable educational and care programmes can be developed and strengthened.
“This project clearly demonstrates how solidarity within the UEM communion makes a real difference. Through our shared support, children who might otherwise have very limited opportunities can gain access to education, protection, and new perspectives for their future,” says Reuben Inganjii, Project Officer at UEM in the Africa Region.
