The second Madang-Workshop of UEM saw intense discussions, as the eucomenical council came together on the general assembly in Busan. Under the theme "gospel and poular culture" the head of the evangelism department, Dr. Claudia Währisch-Oblau, introduced the book „Open to Go“, which provides readers with reports, bible studies and discussion topics on this topic.
The book poses the question, which consequences facebook, soccer and global consumerism have for the modern church. Where does it have to change, to present the gospel in this culture. In varoius small groups the participants discussed , which trends the church should adopt and which it should resist. The range of topics spanned from certain musical styles to homosexuality. The workshop made it clear, that the question, whether the gospel and popular culture are compatible, concerns every christian confession worldwide. The work book proved to be a helpful ressource in this controversy. Among the participants were leaders from UEM-churches in Afrika, Asia and Germany, as well as the bishop of United Church of Canada and the coptic bishop of Sydney.
