After the devastating typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippine islands of Leyte and Samar, the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP), a member church of the United Evangelical Mission (UEM), has begun with emergency aid actions. A centre for distributing food, water, medicine and other first aid goods is set up on Cebu island, close to the worst hit areas. Yesterday UEM council member Rose Pia Dulce managed to get through to the city of Tacloban. She reports about a completely destroyed city. Almost all houses closer than one kilometer to the shore have collapsed, she writes. The church owned hospital Bethany was almost completely destroyed. Surgeries cannot be carried out anymore. The hospitals also runs out of medicine, as the storm itself hit the hospital's pharmacy, and the remaining medicine was looted. It is hardly possible to get an overview of the destructions, the UCCP told the UEM. Many villages are still cut off and communication breaks down again and again.
