Philippines: UEM community sends € 100,000 emergency aid

The UEM community supports the UCCP emergency help with more than € 100,000. The money does not only come from the German member churches and the UEM emergency fund, but from member churches in Africa and Asia as well. The Chinese Rhenish Church, for example, had sent $ 5,000 on Saturday already, the Christian Church of Northern Central Java € 1,000.

Relief work started

The United Church of Christ in the Philippines has already begun to distribute food and fresh water. The church has set up an central relief centre on the Island of Leyte, which was hit worst when Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines on Saturday. The emergency relief work is led by UEM council member Bishop Rose Pia Dulce. She reports about desperate, hungry people and uncountable bodies lying in the streets of the destroyed city of Tacloban.

News storms expected

The UCCP wil deliver food, water, medizine and blankets to thousands of people. It will be difficult to reach all, though, because many roads are still unpassable and many churches destroyed which now cannot be used as shelters. New storm are espected in the area and could worsen the situation even more.

Donation campaign in the Philippines

Many people within the Philippines have sent money already. Bischop Reuel Norman O. Marigza has called for a nationwide donation campaign: "We shall make a nation-wide campaign for the Advent season for our churches to just celebrate the Christmas austerely and give sacrificially for the victims of a series of disasters that visited our country."
