“Social Change Is My Priority”

Kristina Merkel is the new Assistant in the Africa Region. She took up her work on March 1st. She is now preparing the transition together with Katja Romanek, who will retire on May 1st. Her tasks include correspondence with the African member churches of the UEM, coordinating appointments, as well as accompanying and supporting Rev. John Wesley Kabango, Executive Secretary of the Africa Department of the UEM.

What brought Merkel to the UEM was her international interest, combined with a desire to make a difference to the social inequalities in our societies. Her enthusiasm for social concerns motivated her to study sociology in Frankfurt a.M., where she specialised in human rights and conflict research. Most recently, she was a transition counsellor for students on their way from school to job education .

In her free time, she enjoys swimming and travelling - from her time as a flight attendant, she has friends on almost every continent.
