Good work deserves good money: Only when producers of clothing worldwide are being paid what they deserve, the petition achieves its goal.
The petition "Good Clothes Fair Pay" calls on the European Commission to enact EU legislation that guarantees living wages for textile workers.
The United Evangelical Mission has been campaigning for the rights of textile workers for years, among other things through its membership in the Clean Clothes Campaign, which also supports this petition. Thus, the Human Rights Campaign 2019 dealt with human rights in the textile industry. Here you can find the website of the action, here the brochure with further information.
Human rights and labour rights are systematically violated in the globalised textile industry. Wages play a decisive role in this. In most cases, extremely low wages are paid, on which the families of the workers cannot live in dignity.
Workers in the producing countries are organised and have been fighting for their rights for decades. But the textile industry is a global field that can only be made fair if the Global North and the Global South work together.
Voluntary commitments by companies to change this situation have not been successful. Therefore, legal regulations are needed that oblige companies to respect human rights along their supply chains. A supply chain law is currently being negotiated at EU level. The petition is a way towards EU law that not only promises but guarantees living wages for textile workers.
If you are a national of an EU country, you can sign the petition here.
Thank you very much to everyone who signes or supports this petition and the cause for just payment.
