About three hours drive from the capital city Kigali, in a very remote area of Murwa village, Jarama, Ngoma District, Rwanda, UEM support through the Presbyterian Church of Rwanda (EPR) is contributing to poverty alleviation. A rural community made of majority widows and widowers from the 1994 genocide are witnessing an improved living condition as a result of the UEM support received in 2012 for an integrated project. Achieved results are the following:
- Tree planting fighting drought and rain falls: About 40.000 trees planted in 2012-2013.
- Agricultural improvement through the application of manure from domestic animals (goats). The population learnt the skills related to compost production and improved seeds application, mainly beans and maize. They witnessed increased agricultural production.
- From their harvest, the population reported to have saved some money which is helping their families to provide school materials for children at school, pay for annual health insurance for family members (about 3,30 € per person), contribute to their local micro credit project and to building /extending their church as the existing one is becoming small.
The community members say "thank you to UEM supporters who are enabling us to improve our living conditions by meeting food, education, clothing, health and improved housing needs".
