The political shift of the government in the USA – what effects does it have for the society in Indonesia and Germany?
The new US-administration under President Trump is affecting the humanitarian and human rights services of many non-governmental organizations in Indonesia which had to stop their work for local communities by the beginning of February. Those often do not understand the reasons behind why local organizations suddenly are not with them any longer. At the moment the impacts for local communities in Indonesia are serious and cannot be fully foreseen. At the same time, Indonesia itself is governed by a new President with a military career and a history of alleged grave human rights violations. The former General President Prabowo Subianto is at good terms with President Trump and immediately congratulated him after his inauguration. In the future, the US might increase its business investments in Indonesia while at the same time decreasing its support for democratic efforts.
The results of the federal elections in Germany on 23rd of February showed that the right-wing populist party AfD (Alternative for Germany) is continuously gaining popularity in Germany. It became the second strongest political party with more than 20% of the vote. As in the US the political climate shows more and more a stricter anti-migration policy for Germany. At the same time Germany must realize that the “never-ending-good-transatlantic-relationship – to - US” is in a big crisis.
In this seminary we ask, which influence the new US administration under President Trump has politically, economically and socially on the Indonesian and German society. And we want to reflect the role of the churches in these dynamic and unpredictable developments.
