The Anglican Church in Rwanda with its dioceses Butare, Cyangugu, Kigeme and Shyogwe has been a member of the UEM since 1978. The EAR was founded in 1922 through the activities of Anglican missionaries from Great Britain and became independent in 1975. It has 25 pastors and 450 catechists who serve 330,000 members.
Like all parts of Rwandan society, the church has suffered from the genocide, and one of its top priorities is to train new clergy. The church has a role as a healing ministry to the many traumatized people in Rwanda and in reconciliation, restoration, and rehabilitation. The church is also involved in rural development, medical work, vocational training, education, and the fight against HIV/AIDS.
