The Evangelical Church of Westphalia (EKvW), based in Bielefeld, is the fourth largest Protestant regional church in Germany. It has around 2 million members in approximately 450 congregations and 26 church districts. Its territory includes the German administrative regions of Münster, Arnsberg and Detmold (excluding the district of Lippe). The church leadership consists of 14 members and is responsible for guiding the church on behalf of the Regional Synod (Landessynode).

In the course of history, a presbyterial-synodal order developed in the EKvW. It states that the leadership of the EKvW at the congregational level lies with the elected presbyteries and at the district and state church level with the synods (district synod / state synod). Ordained pastors and presbyters work together on an equal footing in all governing bodies at all levels.

The Westphalian Regional Church maintains a variety of ecumenical partnerships within the UEM Communion of Churches. The partnership work takes place at the level of the church congregations and church districts and is supported by the oikos Institute for Mission and Ecumenism in Dortmund.
