Theologian Sabine Hübner is the new Head of the United Evangelical Mission’s (UEM) Regional Service since 1st October 2024. This area of work contributes to making the worldwide ecumenical community a living, tangible reality in the everyday life of congregations within the UEM member church EKiR* in Germany. She takes the succession of Angelika Veddeler, who retired at the end of September.
In her new position, she is also building on her experience as a church historian in Oldenburg und Mainz (both Germany): "In that time, a central concern of my work was to develop power-critical perspectives with the students – particularly with regard to racism and anti-Semitism. At the same time, education in democracy became important, and is going to remain a focus in the future."
At UEM, the theologian values the opportunities to bring together people from different contexts and create spaces for learning: "My time in the Department for Justice, Peace and the Integrity of Creation at the UEM showed me that we need strong networks if we want to work effectively for a better world. I look forward to contributing to this in my new position." The Regional Service is a very special interface, says Hübner. It connects the concerns of the worldwide ecumenical movement with the concrete practice of congregational life on the ground. "I am excited about working with a team of six wonderful people who come from a variety of contexts."
In her free time, she enjoys hiking, preferably in the mountains. "Up there, I often feel that I gain a new perspective on things – and that does me good from time to time!"
We wish Sabine Hübner all the best and God's blessing for her new role at the UEM.
