  • International ecumenism must be kept alive!

The Evangelical Church in the Rhineland is considering a significant reduction of its membership contribution to the United Evangelical Mission (UEM).

As the Executive Board of the UEM, we kindly ask you to carefully reconsider this decision. Such a reduction would, in effect, mean cutting back on the EKiR’s own core ecumenical commitments — precisely those values and responsibilities that the Church of the Rhineland stands for.

We do so in deep gratitude for the reliable support that the UEM has received for decades. We are also fully aware that the EKiR has often stood by our side with advice and practical assistance as was recently shown through its financial support for our member church in the Philippines in disaster relief.

Bishop Dr Abednego Keshomshahara

is Head of the Northwest Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania.  (ELCT-NWD)  and UEM Moderator.

Ephorus em. Dr Robin Butarbutar

ist Ephorus em. of the Toba Batak Christian Protestant Church in Indonesia (HKBP), member of the UEM Council and Vice-Moderator.

Bishop Mothusi Letlhage

is Head of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Botswana (ELCB), member of the UEM Council and Vice-Moderator.

We are the EKiR, and the EKiR is the UEM

The EKiR is part of the UEM communion of churches in Africa, Asia, and Germany, together with the v. Bodelschwingh Foundations Bethel. In this way, the EKiR is an integral part of the international ecumenical community embodied by the UEM.

The UEM is part of the EKiR and not an external cost factor

The UEM is neither an external institution nor just another budget item — it is the living expression of the EKiR’s international ecumenism, manifested in its congregations, networks, and partnerships.

Reduction to the UEM mean multiple cuts to the EKiR itself.

The EKiR’s membership contribution to the UEM can be offset against KED funds. This means that every euro contributed to the UEM effectively costs the EKiR only 50 cents. Of course, the same applies in reverse in the case of a reduction. In other words, every euro saved would in fact reduce the EKiR’s budget by only 50 cents.

Our Appeal:

Especially at a time when social polarization is increasing, the international voice of the church is more important than ever. The UEM is a visible sign of unity in diversity in action – and one of the strongest expressions of the EKiR's global responsibility.

We therefore ask you to secure the membership fee for the UEM. This does not affect "the others," but the heart of our common church.
