„We shall overcome“

The campaign was launched with the hashtag "we shall overcome".

More than one hundred people from three continents sing "We shall overcome" together as a sign against racism. (Potos: UEM)

After the first international UEM music project in Corona times "Amazing Grace" - Connected through Music - The Sound of UEM - a bigger "virtual choir" project has now been created: More than one hundred people from three continents sing "We shall overcome" together as a sign against racism. UEM and the Evangelical Church of Westphalia had invited people to send in their entries.

The song comes from the civil rights movement in the USA and is a classic in the fight for justice, human rights and against discrimination. Musicians and singers from Asia, Africa and Europe, some of them also part of UEM's international church music network, have now reinterpreted the piece of music. For this purpose they practiced and recorded their voices independently with the help of digital tutorials created by Vera Hotten. The result stands for a globally connected church in times of Corona - digitally networked and spiritually connected.

The transcultural music project was jointly called for by the United Evangelical Mission in Wuppertal, the Office for Mission, Ecumenism and Church World Responsibility (MÖWe) and the Institute for Community Development and Missionary Services (igm) of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia.
